Reputed Gambino crime family boss shot dead at NYC home

Francesco Cali, the reputed boss of the crime family once led by John J. Gotti, was shot dead outside his New York City home late Wednesday, authorities said.

Police apprehended Anthony Comello in New Jersey on Saturday and expect to charge him with murdering Cali, the New York Police Department's Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea told a news conference. Cali's body was found in an area of Staten Island that has been home to some of New York's most notorious mobsters and their families. An assistant DA there referred a reporter to the office's public information officer, who was not immediately available.

The 53-year-old Cali, a native of Sicily, was shot to death by a gunman who may have crashed his truck into Cali's vehicle to lure him outside.

Shea declined to say if Comello had a criminal record, but said he had "crossed paths" with the NYPD.

The suspect "is now being held in jail in New Jersey pending court appearances, where we anticipate we will have him returned to Staten Island to face murder charges for the death of Francesco Cali, which occurred on this past Wednesday evening", Shea said.
