If May can secure a legally binding change on provisions for the Irish border, some lawmakers who opposed to deal may be persuaded to vote for it in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
That's unlikely. There are a few hard-core "Brexiteer" members of Parliament in May's Conservative Party who support leaving the European Union with no deal, and a recent poll showed a majority of the party's rank-and-file members agree.
Lidington added that the changes meant the European Union could not "trap" the United Kingdom in the backstop and if Brussels were to act with that intention it would be an "explicit breach" that could be challenged through arbitration.
Mr Liddington told MPs that they faced a choice: "Vote for an improved deal or plunge this country into a political crisis".
Lidington spoke before May and Juncker emerged from their talks. May has spoken by phone to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker twice in the past 24 hours.
"What happens is the British people who voted for this. will see a government walking away, a parliament walking away from a question that they themselves put to the people", said Davis.
"An unchanged withdrawal agreement will be defeated firmly by a sizeable proportion of Conservatives and the DUP if it is again presented to the Commons", they wrote in the Sunday Telegraph.

"We have an opportunity now to leave on March 29, or shortly thereafter".
The Brexit process has now reached an impasse, where London has struck a bargain with Brussels on a departure deal that is both unpopular with British voters and that has been voted against by Britain's Parliament, but it will not be modified or revisited in any way by European leaders.
"This is a government in chaos, with a country in chaos because of this mess", Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said. Many have predicted her political demise and so far been proved wrong. Is she going to survive? After May called a snap election in 2017 and led her party to disastrous results, George Osborne, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer whom May had sacked, called her a "dead woman walking." It is irritated, too, that Britain is seeking changes to an agreement that May herself helped negotiate.
With talks in Brussels making little progress, Downing Street was trying to limit the damage of what threatens to be a disastrous week for Mrs May, with the prospect of multiple defeats looming in the Commons.
"I think that an important offer has again been made to Britain, and now it is of course for Britain to respond to these offers", she said.
If she loses the vote, she has said MPs will get a vote on Wednesday on whether to leave without a deal and, if they reject that, then a vote on whether to ask for a limited delay to Brexit.
May warned last week that any delay could mean "we may never leave the European Union at all".
Nicki Minaj Cancels Show In France & Fans Chant "Cardi B!"
The announcement came weeks after Minaj had to cancel another show in Slovenia on February 22 because of "technical difficulties". I love seeing my fans. "I wanna tell you guys that I love you dearly and I really hope to make it up very soon".
Conservative lawmaker Nicky Morgan said May's position will become "less and less tenable" if she suffers more defeats in Parliament this week.
The so-called "meaningful vote" on May's Brexit deal is set for Tuesday but with no changes agreed on both sides to the controversial Irish backstop clause to make the deal more acceptable to British MPs, the United Kingdom government seems to be on course for a repeat of January's historic Commons defeat.
"There is a widely held view that the United Kingdom has not been negotiating in good faith over the last few days", he said, adding that at least one diplomat had mentioned planning for a "post-Theresa May government".
For pro-Brexit campaigners, that would be a betrayal of the 2016 referendum vote to leave the EU.
"These moves are the inevitable outcome of Brexit", the report said.
Unconfirmed reports say Theresa May will travel to Strasbourg later.
