Snowstorm buries Northwest, with more on the way

Residents in Portland and Seattle who are more accustomed to rain than snow waited in long lines to buy shovels and de-icer.

The sun was out Sunday morning but the National Weather Service says snow will return late in the afternoon into the evening across the Northwest.

The low temperature in the Seattle area tonight will dip into the upper 20s, with a windchill dropping into the teens.

The storm will arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday with flurries before snow becomes steadier sometime around 8 a.m. Snow will change to freezing rain at times after noontime before changing back to snow and then to sleet and rain as the high temperature climbs just above the freezing mark excepts areas farthest north.

It was 9 degrees in Arlington, Washington early Sunday. The National Weather Service said the first storm system is expected to arrive in the area Sunday night with light accumulation, and the second system will push through Monday and continue into Tuesday.

School district officials throughout OR and southwest Washington were closely following the weather forecasts and storm tracking for Monday classes, KOIN-TV reported. Severe snow drifts shut down Interstate 90 and other roads in central Washington.

In California, more than 120 visitors and staff members were rescued Thursday in a Sierra Nevada resort after being trapped by up to seven feet of snow.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency, saying everyone in the state should focus on staying safe.
