Virginia Democrats under fire after another blackface scandal, and sexual assault allegation

U.S. President Donald Trump predicted Thursday the chaos engulfing the top three officials in Virginia, all Democrats, will help him recapture the coastal Atlantic state when he runs for re-election in 2020.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, accompanied by his wife Pamela Northam announces he will not resign during a news conference in Richmond, Virginia, U.S. February 2, 2019. Kirk Cox, Republican speaker of Virginia's House of Delegates, is third in the constitutional line of succession. Some Democrats declared that they would police their own side to a higher standard than Republicans had done with Trump and Kavanaugh.

With Northam and Fairfax under fire, that left Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring as the Democrats' last hope - until Wednesday when Herring admitted that he too dressed up in blackface during a college party in the 80s.

"I know this, these are men who have tried to do the right thing in their professional lives but I think they have to grapple with their private and personal decisions", she said, referring also to sexual assault allegations against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax.

In a statement Wednesday, Tyson elaborated on the alleged encounter with Fairfax in 2004, which she said began with "consensual kissing" in his hotel room but soon turned uncomfortable for her as he forced her to perform oral sex on him as she "cried and gagged".

And yet, no major Democratic presidential candidate - or other party leader - has called for Fairfax's resignation.

"It has all been about political power".

"When the politics are bad - and they're bad - and everything else sucks, as it does now, just follow the principles", Kaine said. They moved close to capturing a majority in the state House of Delegates in 2017, and picked up three U.S. House of Representatives seats from Republicans a year ago. His refusal to defend the state's ban on same-sex marriage once in office was cited by a federal judge who overturned the ban, and Virginia began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2014, almost a year before the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide. "Mr. Fairfax put his hand behind my neck and forcefully pushed my head towards his crotch".

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA) was told about the sexual assault allegation against Fairfax in late 2017 by the accuser herself, Vanessa Tyson. A 2016 University of Virginia study found that a substantial number of white medical students and residents hold "beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites ... beliefs dating back to slavery - associated with the perception that black people feel less pain than do white people". "When they attack each other on these themes, it hits hard".

When asked whether Fairfax should resign, Harris stopped short of saying he should.
