Family of woman in vegetative state who gave birth is 'traumatized and in shock'

Police have collected DNA from male employees at an Arizona long-term care facility where a woman gave birth despite being in a vegetative state for more than a decade.

Providers at Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix were shocked when the woman, who had been a vegetative state for several years, went into labor on December 29, 2018. Now mother and child are recovering in a local hospital.

They released a statement saying that the baby was born - it's a baby boy born into a loving family and that the baby will be well cared for.

Hacienda HealthCare has said the woman was a patient at one of its facilities, and called it a "deeply disturbing, but unprecedented situation".

SHAPIRO: And just briefly, how unusual is it for all the male employees of a facility like this to be asked to give a DNA sample to the police?

The search warrant to obtain DNA samples from the Hacienda HealthCare-owned facility was served on Tuesday, according to company spokesman David Leibowitz, the Associated Pressreported.

PEOPLE reports that the documents state she has been at the Hacienda HealthCare facility for more than 27 years, almost double the length of time that appeared in previous reports.
