Craig McLachlan has been charged by police.

The 53-year-old New South Wales man was charged on summons on Friday and is due to face Melbourne Magistrates Court in February on eight counts of indecent assault, common law assault and attempted indecent assault, Victoria Police said.

After the allegations against McLachlan first emerged a year ago, the actor launched a defamation suit against two Australian news organizations — Fairfax Media and the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

A four-week trial is scheduled to commence in the NSW Supreme Court on February 4.

McLachlan became a household name in Australia in the mid 1980s when he began playing Henry Ramsay in soap opera Neighours.

More recently he has appeared on the ABC TV show The Doctor Blake Mysteries in the lead role of Dr Lucien Blake, who returns home to Ballarat in the 1950s to take over his father's GP practice.
