Torres says returning a day early gives the cruise line "more time to completely clean and sanitise the ship" before it sails again.

Royal Caribbean has said passengers on board will be given full refunds of their fares.

Norovirus is a contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Mr Torres said in a statement to the Associated Press: "We think the right thing to do is get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health".

The Oasis of the Seas is one of newest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet and holds more than 8,000 people; about 3% of people aboard the ship fell ill.

The CDC states that cruise ships are required to log and report the number of passengers and crew who indicate that they have symptoms of gastrointestinal illness.

On social media, passengers said they were not allowed to disembark in Jamaica no Tuesday due to the outbreak.

Thomas shared a video on Twitter of crew members cleaning the ship.

Royal Caribbean plans on fully sanitizing the ship in time for the next sailing.

According to reports, the ship arrived at the Falmouth Pier in Trelawny with approximately 167 reported cases of the gastrointestinal illness.

"We are bringing additional medical staff on board and we're engaging in intensive sanitary procedures to minimize the risk of any further issues", a spokesperson for the cruise line said, adding that affected passengers are being treated with over-the-counter medications by the Oasis' medical team.

Oasis' outbreak is the first to meet the threshold for CDC reporting in 2019 - and the first outbreak of that scale for the ship.

One of the largest cruise ships ever built has cut a sailing short after suffering a massive outbreak of the norovirus stomach bug.

Every year, about a dozen mass norovirus outbreaks are cataloged by the CDC.

Norovirus has also been spreading across the United Kingdom, with a school in Hampshire having to close in December after a reported outbreak.
