President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders in Congress made clear Tuesday in nationally televised remarks that while each side supports border security efforts, they remain far apart on the scale and cost of what those measures should be.
In a speech full of false claims and misleading statistics, Trump painted a portrait of a crisis at the US-Mexico border even as the rate of illegal immigration has steadily fallen over the years and in 2018 reached its lowest point in more than a decade.
Naturally, the president's address was also met with criticism from Democratic leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, who accused him of trying to "stoke fear" - so, you know Trump's boiling over the fact that he was skewered just as badly by his favorite ass-kissing network.
There's growing concern about the toll the shutdown is taking on everyday Americans, including disruptions in payments to farmers and trouble for home buyers who are seeking government-backed mortgage loans - "serious stuff", according to Republican Senator John Thune. A lack of resources to process their refugee claims, along with a Trump administration policy of laying criminal charges against anyone crossing illegally, has led to long queues at border crossings and the separation of children from parents in detention facilities.
"I think certainly I have expressed more than a few times the frustrations with a government shutdown and how useless it is", Capito said Tuesday.

The win was Golden State's 10th straight against NY and fifth in a row at home. Crunching the numbers, Thompson scored 10.75 points for each dribble he took.
"This is an example of the president being nearly delusionary", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
Trump, though, is expecting his new persona of a self-possessed politician turning attention to the drug problem and minorities' loss of jobs due illegal immigration would sway voters to call their legislators to support the wall. "But, all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration", he said. That's because the federal government has been partially shutdown for over two weeks.
"President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis and must reopen the government", said Pelosi.
The comments come on the 19th day of a partial government shutdown, which is centred on Trump's demand for $5.7bn in funding for the wall.
"As for the trade deal he mentioned with Mexico, which he said would pay for the wall, that trade deal is not yet complete".
Trump walks out of shutdown talks with a 'bye-bye'
President Donald Trump gives a prime-time address about border security, January 8, 2018, at the White House in Washington. They fooled Bush 41. "But they are not going to fool Donald Trump who has dealt with tougher than Pelosi and Schumer".
While the standoff continues, some 800,000 federal employees are furloughed or working without pay.
Mr Trump called his meeting with the pair "a total waste of time".
Some Democrats have in the past been willing to negotiate some sort of wall funding in exchange for presidential backing of immigration changes that would allow people brought to the USA illegally as children receive legal status.
"I've held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers". "The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in the country".
In fact, a study by the libertarian Cato Institute previous year found that crime rates among immigrants in Texas - both legal and unauthorized - were lower than those among native-born Americans.
