India MPs pass citizenship bill that excludes Muslims

Protests-Support over Citizenship Bill storms Silchar

The BJP has 61 MLAs and support from 12 MLAs of the Bodoland People's Front and the sole Independent member.

"In view of such protests, the committee is not convinced with the Ministry of Home Affairs' statement that there is no specific report on the unexpected demographic changes of certain North Eastern states, particularly Assam, due to the influx of migrants from Bangladesh", it said.

However, in Tripura where the saffron brigade had wrested power just past year, it had no impact as well as the Barak Valley of Assam which has been supporting the contentious citizenship bill since its inception. "The beneficiaries of the bill can reside in any state of the country".

No one was injured in the attack but the windows of the office chamber of state BJP President Shibun Lyngdoh were damaged. The Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPM and a few other parties have been steadfastly opposing the bill claiming that citizenship can't be given on the basis of religion and that it is unconstitutional.

Reacting to the Asom Gana Parishad's departure from the alliance, BJP spokeperson Rupam Goswami said while its "doors are always open", it can not force anyone to stay in an alliance with it. "AGP had shown signs of friendship with the Congress in the panchayat elections itself, so it is not surprising", he said.

Ahead of its decision to quit the alliance, pressure had been mounting on AGP.

"The political alliance has some set rules. But the BJP has chose to go ahead with the Bill, leaving us with no option but to quit the alliance", Mr Bora said after meeting Mr Singh.

The bill is likely to come up in the Lok Sabha tomorrow which is the scheduled last day of the winter session of Parliament. They were part of the 18-member Sarbananda Sonowal government.
