At present, petrol prices are at its lowest level in over a year while diesel prices have touched a nine-month low.

Asda announced the cut of up to 1ppl off unleaded and 2ppl off diesel, following continued decreases in the wholesale cost.

In October 2018 average fuel prices reached a four-year high with petrol costing £1.31 per litre and diesel at £1.37 per litre.

In Mumbai, where fuel is costlier due to high local taxes, petrol price rose to Rs 74.16 per litre and diesel was at Rs 65.12.

'Motorists filling up at Asda will pay no more than 113.7ppl on unleaded and 123.7ppl on diesel'.

It added that if supermarkets passed on the wholesale savings at the pump, motorists would save an average of 4p per litre. In addition to that, state-run oil-marketing companies made a decision to absorb another cut of Re 1 per litre on petrol and diesel which cumulatively brought down the prices by Rs. 2.5 per litre.

However, both the fuels are yet to breach the Rs 60 per litre mark in recent months though petrol prices did come close to the psychological mark on January 6 when the price dropped to Rs 60.88 per litre.

"Drivers badly need the supermarkets to start competing on price again as the so-called price war has been cold since the middle of October".
