Cardinals Introduce New First Baseman Paul Goldschmidt

The St. Louis Cardinals have completed a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, the team announced Wednesday. He's set to make $14.5 million next season before hitting free agency in 2020, when he'll be in line for another lucrative deal stretching into his 30s.

Since 2013, Goldschmidt ranks second among National Leaguers in home runs (181), RBIs (602), hits (996), runs (599), walks (575) and extra-base hits (413).

St. Louis still has plenty of money to spend this offseason.

Pollock remains on the free-agent market but it seems unlikely the Diamondbacks would re-sign him.

The Diamondbacks have openly been trying to move Goldschmidt and ace Zack Greinke. Greinke came to the Dback after three seasons with the Dodgers.

MARLINS: Former Seattle Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. was hired as pitching coach for the Marlins. Simply put, he's a power hitting first baseman who also hits for a very high average.

Like Mattingly and Marlins CEO Derek Jeter, Stottlemyre and Hillman have ties to the Yankees.
