Ashley, who bought the club in 2007 and has been criticised for a lack of investment in the transfer market, said talks were "at a more advanced stage than they have ever been".

Back in October 2017, Ashley announced that the Magpies were for sale, and in November, Toon fans rejoiced as a deal with Amanda Staveley's PCP Capital Partners group was seemingly on the verge of going through.

The Newcastle boss said he is "hopeful" of stepping aside to find an owner "that will please everybody".
