But national security adviser John Bolton rebuffed the first lady and protected his deputy, prompting the first lady's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, to issue an extraordinary statement Tuesday effectively calling for Ricardel's firing. Ricardel reportedly battled with the first lady's staff during her trip to Africa last month, and was believed to be the source of negative stories about Melania Trump, according to the Journal, which cited unnamed sources.

In a statement, Ricardel said she had been honoured to serve as deputy national security adviser and proud of her tenure working for national security adviser John Bolton.

A White House official who requested anonymity noted in Ricardel's defense that she is one of the highest-ranking women in the Trump administration and that she has never met the first lady.

Trump, after congressional elections last week in which his Republican Party saw its power eroded, is also preparing to oust Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen as part of a post-election Cabinet shakeup, several USA officials said.

The National Interest was the first to report earlier this year that Mira Ricardel, a flame throwing Department of Commerce official and career Republican, would be joining John Bolton's new National Security Council.

Melania Trump is of the most private first ladies in recent memory, which made the public announcement about her displeasure with a top West Wing official all the more surprising.

The public demand by a first lady that her husband fire one of his staff members was extraordinary and perhaps unprecedented in USA history. "Bat shit insane but hardcore Trump", said the former official.

Vice President Mike Pence became the first major member of the Trump administration to comment on Ricardel's ouster at a stop in Singapore on his Asian trip Thursday.

Reports about Melania Trump's multiple ongoing intra-administration feuds comes days after Grisham, her spokesperson, released a statement that could be read as a subtle rebuke to former first lady Michelle Obama.

"Always in an administration after the midterms we make changes", he told the Daily Caller on Wednesday.

In his latest book, the journalist Bob Woodward says that Mr. Kelly said, "We are at the madmen" talking about the White House, leading to a formal denial of the person.

He also is caught in the middle of an anticipated shakeup at the Department of Homeland Security, the agency he formerly led, as President Trump weighs a replacement for Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Mrs. Ricardel was hired by Bolton in April as President Trump's national security adviser and has decades of experience in USA government.
