Only a day after it began, the blaze near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers), and investigators found the dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames.
Fed by high winds and a parched landscape, the fire exploded to 70,000 acres overnight, destroying as many as 2,000 homes and buildings across Butte County, officials said.
One manager of a mobile home park said her husband had struggled to alert as many residents as possible to the fire, hammering on doors and screaming for people to leave.
At around 9 p.m.an evacuation warning was issued for the area south of Highway 32 east of Bruce Road, inside the city limits, according to the Chico Police Department.

In just 24 hours, the disastrous Camp Fire in Northern California has burned at the rate of nearly an acre per second and scorched an area more than twice the size of San Francisco.
The Chico Fire Department said: "Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property".
