Evacuations Ordered in Butte County California as the Camp Fire Expands

Thousands evacuated over fast-moving California wildfire

Only a day after it began, the blaze near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles (285 square kilometers), and investigators found the dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames.

Fed by high winds and a parched landscape, the fire exploded to 70,000 acres overnight, destroying as many as 2,000 homes and buildings across Butte County, officials said.

One manager of a mobile home park said her husband had struggled to alert as many residents as possible to the fire, hammering on doors and screaming for people to leave.

At around 9 p.m.an evacuation warning was issued for the area south of Highway 32 east of Bruce Road, inside the city limits, according to the Chico Police Department.

Video footage taken by ABC Redding affiliate KRCR showed the hospital surrounded by thick smoke as the fire illuminated the darkened sky in the background. He evacuated his family and then returned to the fire to help rescue several disabled residents, including a man trying to carry his bedridden wife to safety.

As she fled, Gina Oviedo described a devastating scene in which flames engulfed homes, sparked explosions and toppled utility poles.

Elsewhere, fire officials say evacuations due to a raging Southern California wildfire are expected to reach about 148,000 and structural losses are expected to be significant.

"We immediately went into action", she said.

In just 24 hours, the disastrous Camp Fire in Northern California has burned at the rate of nearly an acre per second and scorched an area more than twice the size of San Francisco.

The Chico Fire Department said: "Firefighters continue to actively engage the fire in order to protect life and property".

The fire was the fiercest of several wind-driven blazes across California on Thursday, during one of the state's worst years for wildfires. For a bit of perspective on how fast this fire is moving, CNN notes that it's burning the equivalent of 80 football fields every minute.

Voluntary evacuations of 75,000 homes had already been called for because of the Woolsey fire that affected parts of Thousand Oaks, the site of a shooting massacre this week.

- The town of Paradise, Calif.in the Sierra Nevada foothills just north of Sacramento, best known for its deep canyons, the Feather River and a legendary story about a 19th century saloon, was ravaged in fire.

Nicole Kowalczyke, of Chico, said she saw a "very ominous" outside her house.

"It's very chaotic", Officer Ryan Lambert of the California Highway Patrol. Two fires have broken out in Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles, consuming about 12,000 acres, and causing residents there to flee the flames.

According to police, Brown was heading south when he was pulled over between Babcock Boulevard and the Parkway. Oddly enough, it appears Brown was actually pulled over because there was a bank robbery in the area.
