Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata departs Square Enix

Final Fantasy XV DLC plans canceled amid Hajime Tabata's departure

Final Fantasy XV Multiplayer: Comrades Launches This December

Three out of four upcoming installments to "Final Fantasy XV" DLC were canceled, Square Enix announced Wednesday during a special livestream broadcast. It's not clear what came first in this case, the chicken or the egg, but whatever he left first, or the DLC was cancelled causing him to quit, Final Fantasy XV's development is no longer ongoing in the fashion it was before. "The desire is to deliver this new AAA experience to everyone even a day [sic] sooner, and due to this directional change, the company made a decision to focus our resources on the development of this AAA title". The exact reasoning behind the change to the DLC releases wasn't explained, but it likely coincides with the $33 million loss that Square Enix detailed in its most recent fiscal report, which was due to restructuring Luminous Productions.

While Final Fantasy XV is Tabata's biggest project to date, he's been at Square Enix for over a decade, also serving as the director on Final Fantasy Type-0 and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

"A new company called Luminous Productions was formed, centered around the staff who had previously been developing the main game as part of BD2, and they have continued to work on the project since", he said during the stream. However, no further details were divulged on what this new title is.

Final Fantasy XV released in 2016 with a season pass containing extra content, but season pass holders won't be missing out, as it appears everything that was promised has been released. Episode Ardyn, which will flesh out the game's world 30 years prior to Final Fantasy XV's story, will still make it to gamers' systems, with a planned release set for March of 2019. It's not all bad news, in other words.
