Rashida Tlaib has become the first Muslim woman elected to Congress.

Keith Ellison was the first Muslim to win a seat in Congress.

In an interview with Elle magazine in September this year, Ms Omar opened up about her Somalia background and shared what it was like to arrive in the United States for the first time as a child of 10.

"I want you to know my mom, who is from a small village in the West Bank, they're literally glued.to the TV - my grandmother, my aunts, my uncles in Palestine - are sitting by and watching their granddaughter", the 42-year-old daughter of Palestinian immigrants said after her win, bursting into tears.

Bassam Tlaib added that his niece had "stood against Trump" at a time when "even our Arab leaders are unwilling to face (him)".

Omar is the first refugee ever elected to Congress and one of the first two Muslim women. Congressman Andre Carson, who is Muslim and African American, won re-election in his safely-Democratic district in the state of Indiana.

One other Palestinian-American was on the ballot on Tuesday: Ammar Campa-Najjar, the grandson of a Palestinian terrorist who was Yasser Arafat's deputy and was involved in the murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, lost in California's 50th congressional district.

MA will also be getting its first black congresswoman while Arizona and Tennessee stand to elect their first woman senators.
