Lion Air's admission that the doomed jet had a technical issue on a previous flight - as well its abrupt fatal dive - have raised questions about whether it had mechanical faults specific to the new model.

Syachrul Anto, 48, reportedly went missing on Friday (2 Nov) as he did not surface after the search for the day was called off due to failing light.

"He was a volunteer with the Search and Rescue Agency", Isswarto, commander of the Indonesian navy's search and rescue division, told Agence France-Presse. 737 MAX that smashed into the sea early on Monday, 13 minutes after it took off from Jakarta.

Speaking on the sixth day of the search, Mr Syaugi said that two engines and more landing gear had been found.

Syachrul Anto had also been one of the main divers involved in the search for an Air Asia jet that crashed off Borneo in late 2014.

In another tragic twist to the disaster, an experienced Indonesian diver died while on a mission to recover bodies from the crash site.

The plane crashed in waters 30 meters deep but strong currents have hampered the search.

Data from flight-tracking websites show both flights had highly erratic speed and altitude after takeoff, though confirmation is required from data recorded by the aircraft's "black box" flight recorders.

"In principle, all data we have obtained, including flight data and air navigation, and also from other sources - we find that there have indeed been problems" with the plane, Satmiko said.

Investigators are scrambling to try to get data from the partly damaged black box recovered on Thursday.

"The now operating Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft have been inspected and we will continue to monitor and supervise closely, day by day, and if it is found to be significant we will do another inspection and ground them if needed".
