Large Companies are Involved in the Fight Against Plastic Pollution

Major companies responsible for a FIFTH of the world's plastic packaging pledge to end waste

Big brands including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle pledge to turn tide on global plastic waste

Albéa joins the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment launched by Ellen MacArthur Foundation, along with several of its customers and partners, to create a circular economy for plastics. The pledge, which was unveiled at the Our Ocean Conference in Bali on Monday, was created in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and United Nations Environment Program.

Yet we know that while cleaning up is vital, it does not stop the tide of plastic entering the oceans each year.

The global commitment was "a step-change we urgently need in order to move from a linear to a circular economy" according to Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider.

L'Oréal, Johnson & Johnson and Unilever are three of the beauty giants to have signed the commitment, while big-name signatories from the fashion world include H&M, Burberry and Stella McCartney.

Businesses signing the Commitment have undertaken to publish yearly data about progress on the central goals of the project.

UNEP executive director Erik Solheim described the commitment as "the most ambitious set of targets we have seen yet in the fight to beat plastics pollution".

An investigation by Greenpeace's Unearthed published last week also showed how plastic recycling from the United Kingdom and many other western countries has ended up in illegal waste sites in Malaysia as the country has become the world's main destination for plastic waste after China banned most imports of plastic scrap. More than $200 million has been pledged to create a circular economy for plastic.

Aside from the partnership, SC Johnson, as a whole, also pledged to improve 100 percent recyclable, reusable, and compostable packaging by 2025 from its current 90 percent.

The core aim of the commitment - its "vision" - is a circular economy for plastic in which it never becomes waste.

The commitment calls on these companies to start eliminating unnecessary plastics and implementing reusable packaging where possible, starting right now.
