A second migrant caravan encompassing thousands of Central American workers slowly made its way towards the United States' southern border with Mexico this week; setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with the Trump administration and immigration officials.

This new challenge to President Donald Trump's toughening of USA immigration policies comes just days after Vice President Mike Pence told the Conference for Prosperity and Security in Central America that illegal immigration from Honduras is up 61 percent and from Guatemala by 75 percent.

If the migrants reach Mexico, they plan to request refugee status or transit visas to enable them to cross the country and arrive at a USA border crossing.

The group plan to walk from San Pedro Sula in northern Honduras through Guatemala and into Mexico.

"If you do more, I'm here to say on behalf of the president of the United States and the American people, we'll do more", Pence told Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, President Jimmy Morales of Guatemala, and Vice President Óscar Ortiz of El Salvador, according to Fox News.

Mass migrations have become a growing problem at the border.

Pence addressed the three leaders on Thursday in Washington, at the Conference for Prosperity and Security in Central America.

Frustration with poverty is a common explanation by migrants for participating in the latest caravan.
