Astronaut Ricky Arnold, onboard the International Space Station, captured the hurricane churning in the Atlantic as it morphed into a monster storm.

Astronaut Alexander Gerst also joined in the fun, explaining that the courageous space men and women need wide-lense cameras to take these incredible photos.

An American astronaut posted two additional photographs from the International Space Station, showing the storm aimed at Cape Hatteras, a thin and vulnerable strand of islands that jut out from North Carolina. Since reliable record-keeping began more than 150 years ago, North Carolina has only been hit by one Category 4 hurricane: Hazel, with 210 km/h winds in 1954. For the Carolinas, the NHC predicts a "life-threatening storm surge and rainfall".

NASA called the view - captured by cameras on the International Space Station - "stark and sobering".

In addition to the wide shots, some of Gerst's photos are zoomed-in views showing a look nearly directly down into Florence's giant eye.
