Florence, the most powerful storm to menace the US mainland this year, intensified into a Category 4 hurricane as it howled closer to the Carolinas on Monday, prompting evacuations of more than 1 million people to higher ground.

"It's an extremely unsafe, life-threatening, historic hurricane. the forecast shows Florence stalling over North Carolina, bringing days and days of rain".

Residents of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia are being urged to prepare their homes, get supplies and think about possible evacuation.
