"I turned pro at 18 and it took me 20 odd years to get to world No 1, but my advice would be to just dedicate yourself to improving, to learning, to trying to get better".

Rose missed a four-foot putt that would have extended the playoff but still became the 22nd different player to hold the world number one ranking. That put him in violation of a new PGA Tour rule created to route big-name players to smaller events. It's just an incredible feeling right now.

"It took a lot of hard work, a lot of people helping me".

Rose has won nine times on the PGA Tour, where he mostly plays, including one major, the 2013 U.S. Open. The fourth round was a washout Sunday because of steady rain that has left the course unplayable.

But Rose subsequently dropped a shot at the par-four 18th, where his 15-foot putt for the win lipped out.

The pair finished one shot ahead of Americans Xander Schauffele and Billy Horschel.

Five-time BMW championship victor Tiger Woods mounted another vintage charge, but a late back-nine stumble has been the story of his comeback season from spinal fusion surgery. "It is the stuff of boyhood dreams", he said, his smile widening by the second.

"Just a poor playoff".

"The name of the game is you've got to make putts and you've got to roll it", Woods said after the second round, according to ESPN.

Jordan Spieth insisted he will accept his punishment from the PGA Tour if they decide he has breached regulations by failing to play in the required number of tournaments this season.

The Englishman still made the 30-man field for the Tour Championship, but there will be concern over the extent of the complaint and whether he will be able to compete at East Lake - and in Paris later this month.

Spieth and Emiliano Grillo were the only two players who fell out of the top 30.

"It has been tough to go from being on Ryder Cup teams, being on Presidents Cup teams, to outside the top 100 in the world".

"I was in control of my own destiny and didn't have it this week", he added.
