Papadopoulos Says Sessions & Trump Backed Putin Meeting

Papadopoulos says Sessions supported Putin campaign meeting, asks for most lenient sentence

Papadopoulos claims candidate Trump gave nod of ‘approval’ to planning meeting with Putin | TheHill

"While some in the room rebuffed George's offer, Mr. Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr. Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it. George's giddiness over Mr. Trump's recognition was prominent during the days that followed", Papadopoulos' lawyers wrote in a court filing Friday.

Papadopoulos was the first person to be charged in special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Sessions, by contrast, has testified to Congress that he "pushed back" against the idea of the Putin summit.

In a court filing, they asked U.S. District Court Judge Randolph D. Moss to place Papadopoulos on probation at his sentencing set for September 7, saying claims his falsehoods impeded prosecutors with Robert S. Mueller III were "speculative and contrary to the evidence".

Papadopoulos "was the first domino, and many have fallen in behind", his attorneys write Friday. Despite the gravity of his offence, it is indispensable to be mindful what Particular Counsel stated at George's plea of responsible: "he used to be acceptable a runt segment of a immense-scale investigation". He is asking the court to give him probation for his charge of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Mr. Papadopoulos is ashamed and remorseful", Papadopoulos' attorneys wrote Friday.

Trump Says ‘Canada Will Be Out’ Without ‘Fair Deal’ on Nafta
Another key issue is USA tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, though it's unclear whether relief from those will be included. That timeline was the impetus for Trump's Friday letter to Congress notifying them of the preliminary agreement with Mexico .

The defense team called his motives "wrongheaded indeed but far from the sinister spin the Government suggests".

Eager to show his value to the campaign, George announced at the meeting that he had connections that could facilitate a foreign policy meeting between Mr. Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

They said their client was overtaken with the now-infamous scene in which Trump, then-Sen.

Following that campaign meeting, he met with Timofeev, who Mifsud told him had connections to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. That meeting, of course, never occurred, but Papadopoulos apparently raised the potential tete-a-tete with various Trump campaign advisors-including the candidate himself.

His lies about the timing of his meeting with the professor - falsely stating it was before Papadopoulos had joined the campaign - hindered investigators' ability to "effectively question" or detain the professor when he was in Washington in February 2017, prosecutors said in a court filing.

In the filing Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyers lay out the image of an intellectually curious, successful and worldly man.

Papadopoulos had "no experience with U.S. and Russian diplomacy" when he started with Trump's campaign in 2016 - yet eventually became one of the future president's foreign policy advisers. This came after he had learned from a London-based professor who was well connected to the Kremlin, that Russian officials had obtained "thousands of emails" pertaining to Clinton.

The filing indicates that investigators interviewed the professor and that he denied telling Papadopoulos about the emails.

Prosecutors have called for a jail sentence up to six months.

Media reports around that time identified Millian as a source of information in the dossier, though CNN has not confirmed his involvement nor numerous details in the dossier about alleged Trump-Russia collusion.

Papadopoulos' attorneys said he was in over his head in experience both in dealing with Russian Federation and in serving as an adviser to a presidential campaign. This contradicted Papadopoulos' initial conversation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he said he did not know anything about hacked emails until later in the year.
