CDC: Fentanyl use drove record high overdose deaths in 2017

Deaths from drug overdoses increased 22.5 percent in 2017 compared to 2016 in North Carolina, according to the CDC data.

There were almost 30,000 deaths involving those drugs in 2017, according to the preliminary data, an increase of more than 9,000 over the prior year.

But while overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids rose dramatically, deaths from heroin, prescription opioid pills, and methadone fell.

Eden Hazard started on the bench for Chelsea again on Saturday, but came on in the second half with devastating impact. Better teams than Arsenal will punish Chelsea for their defensive mistakes, though, as Sarri admitted after this game.

Controls on prescription opioids have succeeded in flattening the once-exponential growth of legal opioids, but an influx of illicit opioids has moved into the market to meet demand. Previous year the Trump administration declared the epidemic a "public health emergency" but allocated no new funding for states to address the issue.

A record number of Americans died of drug overdoses in 2017, lending to what experts and the Trump administration consider a growing national health emergency - and new efforts to curb the opioid crisis. Based on available death certificate data, DPH analyzed 4,302 opioid-related deaths in MA by occupation and industry to understand whether and how work and injuries related to work may have contributed to opioid use disorders.

The lag time between death and when the data are available for analysis is longer for drug overdose deaths compared with other causes of death, the CDC says.

The CDC's data also showed that the overdose rate decreased in a number of states, including Vermont and MA, where overdose rates were among the highest in the nation.

Federal health bodies have increased surveillance of drug overdoses and deaths in recent years to better understand the threat before them. While the opioid epidemic was originally concentrated in rural, white populations, the death toll is becoming more widespread. In addition, the rate of opioid-related deaths in the farming, fishing, and forestry occupations was more than five times the average rate for MA workers, despite the small number of workers in these fields. The monthly CDC numbers suggest that deaths might have begun leveling off by the end of the year. Using deaths that are confirmed, the agency measured a 10.2 percent increase in overdose deaths between 2016 and 2017. Continuing funding may help more states develop the kind of public health programs that appear to have helped in New England. "We want to continue seeing a decline". But the package also includes measures that could expand treatment for people who already use opioids. One worrying sign: Jones said there is some early evidence that drug distributors are finding ways to mix fentanyl with black tar heroin, which could increase death rates in the West.
