THURSDAY, Aug. 16, 2018 (HealthDay News) - Doctors recently removed a contact lens that was embedded in a woman's eyelid for almost three decades after she was hit in the eye while playing badminton.

This kind of contact lens injury typically causes a sharp and a scratchy pain along with redness.

Once the cyst and the lens were removed from the woman's eyes, her peepers went back to normal.

Doctors said the hard lens drifted into the woman's upper eyelid and remained there. The doctors operated on the cyst and found inside a contact lens. But the mother of the Brits remembered that at the age of 14 while playing badminton her daughter hit the shuttlecock in the left eye. On doing a surgery to remove the lump, they found the old contact lens inside - perfectly intact.

Unlike the soft contact lenses which are the most commonly used today, RGP lenses can initially be uncomfortable for the wearer and are more prone to dislodging from the eye during activities like sports. She wore rigid contacts at the time, and the contact in the injured eye was never found.

She told specialists she felt "a lot more comfortable" after the lenses were removed.

Gas-permeable contact lenses are made of rigid, durable plastic that transmits oxygen, not to be confused with popular "soft" contacts or old-fashioned "hard" contacts. The case was highlighted in the August 10 online edition of BMJ Case Reports.

The patient did not know how the lens got into the fabric of the century, because she has long abandoned them. The doctors noticed her eyelid drooped a bit.
