Twitter CEO plots to change rules in hate speech crackdown

Twitter Gives a Very Bad and Unsatisfying Explanation for Why It Won’t Ban Alex Jones

Despite the moves by its rivals, Twitter has said it will not ban Jones from its site.

Apple said it regularly monitors all apps for content violations.

Twitter will not remove controversial radio host Alex Jones from its network despite the fact some of his content was taken off Facebook, YouTube, Spotify, and Apple's iTunes, and Podcast apps. He's a conspiracy theorist and far-right broadcaster whose hate-filled behavior includes spending years claiming that the horrific Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax.

Infowars fans subsequently sought other ways to find Jones's content, and his app shot up the Apple and Google Play app store rankings.

After removing several of Jones' podcasts from its digital store earlier this week, Apple came under fire for leaving up the Infowars app.

"We do not shadow ban according to political ideology or viewpoint or content, period", said Dorsey, referring to the practice of shutting down users' access to another user's content.

Jones is now facing a raft of defamation lawsuits, including multiple suits from the families of Sandy Hook victims.

"We strongly support all points of view being represented on the App Store, as long as the apps are respectful to users with differing opinions, and follow our clear guidelines, ensuring the App Store is a safe marketplace for all", Apple said in a statement issued Wednesday night.

"We carefully review content on our platforms and products for violations of our terms and conditions, or our content policies", a Google spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. It has suggested that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax, and that the September 11 terrorist attacks were an inside job orchestrated by the United States government. In the news category on Apple's App Store, Infowars earned the third slot under the top free apps, behind Twitter and News Break, a local and breaking news service, revealing a sudden boost of user downloads.

Jones' Facebook account has also been suspended for 30 days but he still has a "verified" Twitter account.

Jones says his shows, which are broadcast on radio and online platforms and had been available on YouTube, reached at least 70 million people a week. Dorsey noted his fear of Twitter slipping into censorship, and noted that Jones has yet to violate Twitter's terms. "Anyway I do have an interview announcement, Jack Dorsey is the CEO of Twitter".
