The US Geological Survey said the quake, felt on the nearby holiday island of Bali, measured 5.9 on the Richter scale.

The national disaster agency has stood by its figure of 131, saying that other numbers were coming from incomplete sources that had not been cross-checked for duplication.

Many buildings still standing on the island have been weakened.

Almost 1,500 people are in hospital with serious injuries and more than 156,000 have been displaced due to the extensive damage to thousands of homes.

But Mr Sutopo said some areas in the north had still not received any aid.

Some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters. "The grandson tried to help the grandmother to get out but he pushed too hard", she said.
