Trump's eldest son confirmed the meeting in June 2016, but claimed the lawyer provided no useful information and eventually turned the subject toward policies on Russian adoption that had been curtailed in response to US sanctions.

He repeated that he had not known about the meeting in advance.

On Twitter, he wrote: "Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower". He went on to distance himself from Trump Jr. and the meeting: "I did not know about it!"

Ingraham continued to rail against the Clinton campaign for paying for opposition research, and Don Jr. joined in to bash the "cycle of the media narrative".

Trump Jr.is a subject in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia's investigation for his role in a meeting at Trump Tower with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya. Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied his government interfered.

But the president's opponents say the tweet Sunday morning contradicts his earlier statements, which had said the meeting at Trump Tower focused on Russian adoptions. He also released the email exchange that brought about the meeting.

Donald Trump Jr, along with his father, US President Donald Trump, and others in the administration have downplayed the importance of the meeting.

The Russian government denied Americans the right to adopt Russian children as part of its response to a set of United States sanctions imposed by Congress in 2012.

"The president can't distinguish between any allegations of conspiracy against his campaign and the broader problem of Russian Federation continuing to interfere in our elections", Schiff said on CBS's "Face the Nation". Last week, however, he adopted his lawyers' tactics and insisted "collusion is not a crime". The U.S. intelligence community, members of Congress in both parties and even Trump have acknowledged that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election. And despite Trump's public Twitter denial, the president has expressed worry that his son may face legal exposure even as he believes he did nothing wrong, according to three people close to the White House familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations. She also posited that the president's claim on Twitter that he was not aware of the Trump Tower meeting could be inessential to Mueller's probe in the light of the "false" statement from past year that claimed the meeting's goal was to discuss the adoption of Russian children. They described the statement, which had not mentioned that the Russian lawyer was expected to bring damaging information about Clinton, as "short but accurate".

The Trump Tower meeting also included Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his campaign chairman at the time, Paul Manafort, who is on trial over tax and bank fraud charges after being indicted by Mueller.

Any legal battle over whether the president can be forced to testify could go all the way to the US Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's This Week show.

"With the amount of cooperation that has gone forward it's hard for us to see why they need the president's testimony", Mr. Sekulow said.
