Apple takes an axe to its App Affiliate Program

Here's the full text from Apple's post on its site: "Thank you for participating in the affiliate programme for apps".

As mentioned, starting October 1, Apple says apps and in-app purchases for macOS and iOS will be entirely removed from the iTunes Affiliate Program. The implication seems to be that Apple's own app discovery algorithms are now sufficiently driving revenues, and it no longer needs sites to recommend and link to specific apps and games.

In an announcement via newsletter, Apple said that all commissions for iOS and Mac apps in addition to in-app content will be removed, while "all other content types (music, movies, books and TV) will remain in the affiliate program".

This important source of revenue for some will be drying up soon. Publishers that were too reliant on Facebook traffic also have lost business when the social network has made changes to its algorithms that determine what people see in their news feeds.
