As for Apple, the launch of a new iPad at the beginning of the year, along with an improvement to its operating system and renewed investment into education are cited as reasons for their growth and top spot in the market.

Samsung sold 71.5 million units in the second quarter, down 10.4 percent from the year-ago period. The Chinese tech major has shipped about 54 million handsets which are up to 41 percent year on year, as per research firm Canalys report. Consumer division chief Richard Yu on Friday said he wants Huawei to be No. 1 in smartphones by the fourth quarter of next year, with a market share of more than 20 per cent - despite acknowledging its virtual absence in a pivotal US market.
