Ocasio-Cortez, 28, is a self-proclaimed socialist who if elected in the fall would become the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress.

The congressman who is now running as the Trump-endorsed Republican candidate for Florida governor, made the comments while on the campaign trail in Orange Park, Florida, according to Huffpost who first obtained video of the event.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) took NY congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to task for her support for socialism, refusing to back down on his derogatory characterization of her as "this girl O-cay-zia or whatever she is".

Vasquez did not say why DeSantis called Ocasio-Cortez "this girl".

DeSantis added, referencing Ocasio-Cortez's comments (to PBS) about the ongoing Israel and Palestine conflict.

Another New York Democrat, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, did not meet with Ocasio-Cortez, but said he was not concerned that her brand of politics could drag down Democrats in less liberal states.

Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez's communications director, said the primary win helped put Ocasio-Cortez on a national stage and that her victory speech on June 26 inspired people nationwide. "Socialist Ocasio-Cortez is a textbook example of someone who doesn't understand the basic principles of our Constitution".

"It's basically Socialism wrapped in ignorance", he said.

Camp's sister reportedly told police he'd been depressed lately but it's not clear whether he expressed any suicidal thoughts. Camp was previously spotted outside the hardware store in April and flagged a police officer down to ask them a question.

When the rising political star caught wind of what the congressman had said about her, she responded in one succinct tweet where she told him exactly "whatever" she was.

Ocasio-Cortez said it was "strange" DeSantis did not recognized that since roughly 75,000 Puerto Ricans relocated to Florida after Hurricane Maria a year ago.

DeSantis and his campaign said his comments have very little to do with identity and are more a critique of Ocasio-Cortez' socialist views. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign and a favorite of left-wing Democrats, smacked back on Twitter.

"Rep DeSantis, it seems you're confused as to 'whatever I am, '" Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

His answers on Smith still leave more questions, however, and that leaves the program in the court of public opinion. Meyer did not elaborate on whether that incident is why Smith's contract was terminated on Monday.
