White House Unhappy With Pompeo-North Korea Visit

North Korean leader Kim-Jong-un has sent President Donald Trump a note expressing his satisfaction with last month's summit in Singapore, and his desire to meet again.

At high-level talks last week, North Korea and the US confirmed they are still poles apart on the next steps to be taken in the process.

On June 23, the U.S. Forces Korea said that it had moved 100 wooden "temporary transit cases" to the border to prepare for the remains' delivery.

Monday's rescue effort took about nine hours, two fewer than the day before, in a sign of growing confidence and expertise. The boys brought out of the dark, winding cave on Monday are "safe and conscious", said Chiang Rai province acting Gov.

Mr Kim had agreed during the summit with President Trump to recover "POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified". About 100 wooden transport cases were sent to the DMZ in recent weeks to prepare for receiving U.S. troop remains.

The North's state media normally lead their television bulletins and front pages with Kim's doings, but a seven-day absence from the headlines, including during Pompeo's visit, had prompted speculation on his whereabouts among Korea-watchers.

He also agreed to repatriate remains of U.S. troops who died during the Korean War six decades ago.

Trump tweeted images of the letter, dated July 6, both in Korean and translated into English.

Returning the remains of the troops was part of the deal signed by Kim and Trump in Singapore. Roughly 5,300 U.S. troops presumed to have been killed in the Korean war are unaccounted for.

The White House had earlier said Mr Pompeo would meet with Mr Kim, but he did not turn up and he only met with Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean leader's powerful right-hand man.

Mr. Pompeo denied that the talks went poorly, telling pool reporters that progress was made "in every element of our discussions".

Pompeo insisted the talks were making progress but as soon as he left, the North's foreign ministry berated him over his "unilateral and gangster-like" demands and for offering no constructive steps on the U.S. side. A confidential U.S. report presented to the United Nations security council, however, estimated the delivery of at least 759,793 barrels of oil products to North Korea between 1 January 1 and 30 May.
