Apple's AirPower Wireless Charger Might Be Released In September

Apple's AirPower wireless charger may not be released until September (AAPL)

However, a new Bloomberg report tells us that the AirPower could go on sale before or in September, according to some company engineers.

Devices supporting Apple products have existed since the September release of the iPhone X; we tested three popular models from Mophie, Belkin, and RavPower in late October (spoiler alert: the RavPower Alpha Series Fast Charger blew away the competition). Over the past few months, Apple engineers have been testing the charging mat by using it as their charger at the office, the report said. Moments earlier, Apple unveiled had the first iPhones that supported wireless charging, including the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8.

Apple originally stated that the AirPower would be released sometime in 2018, but it didn't give an exact date. Different device requires different amounts of power, and the pad needs a method to detect which device is where - and then to supply the correct amount of power only to devices sitting in that specific location.

Apple did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

However, the prime minister's chief of staff, Fitsum Arega, later tweeted that no deaths had yet been reported. Unconfirmed reports by local media and Reuters said that the explosion was caused by a grenade.

Apple's chief designer Jony Ive has long said his eventual goal for the iPhone is for it to be a single piece of glass, but there are obvious technological hurdles that come with such a design. Apple is said to be using custom charging technology as well as Qi wireless charging technology in the pad. Hopefully such a powerful friend on the production line will help Apple make good on its "2018" release window.

The firm considered removing the current charging system on the iPhone X, but they decided against it, as wireless charging is still slower than traditional charging.

Unlike existing wireless chargers, however, AirPower was to be something different. Our April 2018 patent report noted that "While there are several methods that safeguard against heating up an object accidentally on the charging pad like vehicle keys, PowerbyProxi's invention provides their own based on an inductive power transmitter comprising at least one power transmitting coil configured to generate an inductive power transfer (IPT) field, and an object detection (OD) system configured to detect the presence of an object based on a change in energy decay or change in resonant frequency of a resonant circuit integrated with or coupled to the transmitting coil".

In AirPower's case, there's even more heat involved with more induction coils under the surface. For example, Apple's wireless headphones, AirPods, were delayed in 2016.

Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams slay at Kit Harington's wedding
No wedding date has been announced yet but we can't wait to see how awesome everyone is sure to look when it does happen. The couple met on the HBO hit series in 2012, where they played on-screen couple Jon Snow and Ygritte.

The AirPower charger should bolster this business - when it finally arrives.

Apple faced similar issues with the HomePod smart speaker, which was released this year, about six months after the device was first announced. So it looks like there's added excitement to Apple's next launch event. Is it time for Apple to remove the Lightning connector from the iPhone?

Launching AirPower in September would mark a year since it was announced.
