North Korean media praises Trump-Kim summit as 'meeting of the century'

In his post-summit interview Tuesday with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, President Donald Trump said something quite astonishing about how the citizens of North Korea view their supreme leader.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

When Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong visited the global media center for the summit at F1 Pit Building on Sunday, he said it will cost the city state "around 20 million Singaporean dollars" (W16.1 billion, US$1=W1,078) to host the "historic summit".

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most risky problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!"

President Trump announced that the summit was as a "success", and that the United States and North Korea were able to come to an understanding that "Pyongyang would work toward denuclearization and the United States would end joint military exercises with South Korea", according to CBS News.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat.

It devoted half of its six pages to the meeting and splashed 33 photos of Kim and Trump shaking hands, attending a working lunch and sitting down to sign the agreement to denuclearize on the cover and on the inside pages.

Referring to Kim Jong Un, Trump said: "His country does love him".

Any lessening of tensions is positive but an assurance that the threat of war is removed based simply on a relationship between a President who is term-limited and a volatile dictator who leads a criminal regime lacks the certainty and permanence of verifiable disarmament that the administration says is its goal.

Thirty-nine percent believe the summit has lowered the threat of nuclear war between the United States and nuclear-armed North Korea, slightly more than the 37 percent who said they did not believe it changed anything. What's more, it could give North Korea the right to rebuild its nuclear weapons program even if it did actually go through with dismantling it.
