Takfiri terrorists attack besieged Shia towns in Syria's Idlib: Monitor

Five other civilians were killed in other towns.

This is "the highest displacement number since the conflict started", Mr. Moumtzis said, adding that eight in 10 people had come from Rural Damascus and Afrin in the north, while others had been displaced within Idlib governorate itself.

Moumtzis cited reports of a deadly air strike on Sunday that had killed 11 people and hit a pediatric hospital.

"We also worry that for the people of Idlib, there is no other Idlib to take them out to, really this is the last location", he said.

"According to available information, there was fierce fighting in the past twenty-four hours in the said district of the province of Idlib between a large formation of the Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization [outlawed in Russia] and the Jaysh al-Ahrar irreconcilable opposition grouping with the use of heavy artillery guns", the defense ministry said.

Russian Federation is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's main ally in his war against an armed opposition, now in its seventh year.

Since Russia intervened in support of the Syrian regime in 2015, the government has regained control of about half of the country. "Our worry is that with the Idlib situation we may have not [yet] seen the worst in Syria".

Siege tactics have been used throughout Syria's seven-year conflict, mostly by the government.

Idlib, which remains under opposition control, was designated as a "de-escalation zone" in which acts of aggression are expressly forbidden in May of a year ago.

The spokesman noted that the Secretary-General recalled that Idlib is part of the de-escalation agreement reached in Astana, and called on its guarantors "to uphold their commitments".

Wouter Schaap, the Syria director of CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty, said the figure 920,000 of people displaced "is shocking, and shows that the war in Syria is far from being over".

"The humanitarian response on the ground is really at a breaking point. From January to April, there were over 920,000 newly displaced people", he told reporters in Geneva.

It brings the number of people internally displaced in the war-ravaged country to 6.2 million, while there are still some 5.6 million Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries, according to United Nations figures.

"We are on high alert", he said.
