Sebastian Vettel wins Canadian Grand Prix for 50th career victory

Motor racing-Hamilton just happy to finish in Canada

MONTREAL -Sebastian Vettel handed Ferrari its first Canadian Grand Prix pole position since Michael Schumacher in 2001 Saturday while Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton qualified fourth for Mercedes.

Vettel says starting on the purple-wall tyres was a straightforward decision to make and hope it'll work out in his favour to win around Canada for the first time since 2013.

The German will start in the favoured position on the front row of the grid for Sunday's race alongside Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes. Kimi Raikkonen and Daniel Ricciardo will start from the third row in fifth and sixth places respectively.

With 20 laps remaining, Hamilton began to find a rhythm to move within a second of Ricciardo while Bottas, at the front, trimmed Vettel's lead to 3.8 seconds. Vettel's lone pit stop on the 38th of 70 laps saw him emerge with a six-second lead.

Hartley crashed out early at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after an opening lap collision. Today I think we had a couple of small lock ups, but as you continue to push the setup there are areas that can be affected. "There was some electrical stuff going on that hindered us this morning and then this afternoon, so not the best day, but we're OK. I quickly saw that it was going to be hard to take pole position but you always do your best and try to get the best out of the vehicle". Leading from the off, he proceeded to put in a series of exemplary laps to open up a gap to Bottas and had more than four seconds on the Finn by lap 13.

"I was quite happy with my first run in Q3 but I knew there was something more in the auto for the first part of the lap", Vettel continued.

"We knew that, in general, we're lacking power, so we just try to compensate with that", said Verstappen. "We've seen this year it's very close between the three teams and the six drivers so we'll see, but for sure if you start on pole you want to win".
