Marc Gee, superintendent for Preston schools, said Friday afternoon that he heard about the charge being filed but hadn't seen the details.

Robert Crosland is facing one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.

A mother of two boys at the school told the Preston Citizen the puppy was terminally ill and was given to Crosland by its grief-stricken owner; she said Crosland fed the dying puppy to the turtle in a graphic demonstration of the circle of life for his students.

Crosland had fed other animals like rats and snakes previously to the turtle as well.

The news of Crosland being charged was welcomed by many animal lovers online, who demanded the strictest punishment for the science teacher. One online petition calling for Crosland to be fired had almost 189,000 signatures as of Friday afternoon. When the Idaho State Department of Agriculture learned that Crosland was keeping the snapping turtle, an invasive species for which he did not have a permit, authorities seized and killed the reptile.

A counter petition signed by community members, former students and current colleagues expressing support for the long-time science teacher has accumulated roughly 3,700 signature, the Statesman reported. "I felt like it was the more humane thing for Robert to do than to just leave it (the puppy) to die", Hansen told the paper in March.

The uproar after the March 7 incident forced police to step up security amid threats at Preston Junior High School and other schools in the district.

Crosland faces an arraignment June 12 in Franklin County.

Under Idaho law, a first animal cruelty offense is charged as a misdemeanor. An ISDA statement sent to Fox 13 Salt Lake City said that the turtle was "euthanized humanely".

Crosland may have to pay a hefty fine of 5,000 United States dollars in case the charges against him are proven true.
