Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis revealed club chiefs secretly voted on their next boss, with Unai Emery a unanimous selection.

"We went through a pretty wide-ranging discussion, challenging each other on as much as we could on preconceptions and assumptions we might have had going into the process".

Gazidis said: "Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly".

Wenger's travails in recent years mean Emery will not have to worry about the Champions League in the coming season but Arsenal can rest assured their ultradriven boss will be working all hours to get them back there.

Sarri, who has spent the past three seasons at the San Paolo Stadium, has two more years remaining on his contract which runs until 2020. "And Unai was at the top of all of our lists".

"It's a big challenge for me but I worked also with other big projects and, for me, I am proud to be here and work after Arsene Wenger".

"We have to work hard, we have to work well together. For all the coaches over the world, he's a reference and I learned from him all the things in football", he said.

There will be plenty of those, of course, who will delight in citing the Andrew Sachs comparison, which was an easy shot to throw at Emery, but as he wrestled irregular verbs and rearranged an array of vowel sounds, we had a little glimpse of the man's determination.

It means another season in the UEFA Europa League for the north London outfit, a competition Emery won three years in a row while in charge at Sevilla. The target is to be a candidate and to challenge for the title.
